Dear Miracle Mile Merchants and Property Owners:
Recently, the Miracle Mile Improvement Association (MMIA) established a Community Safety Committee charged with helping to provide a safe shopping atmosphere. Our responsibilities include meeting with the Stockton Police Department, addressing citizen and merchant safety concerns and oversight of the public security cameras.
The Safety Committee was fortunate enough to consult with Ron Pettit, a retired police officer, criminal justice instructor, and a community retail security specialist. Through his expertise, Mr. Pettit identified three key areas of improving safety and deterring crime along the Mile:
Use and maintain proper lighting. During several walking surveys at night, it was found that approximately 2/3 of the Mile was not adequately illuminated. Most of the businesses were found to have recessed lighting mounted underneath their awnings that were either not working or activated.
Illumination is inviting and provides a feeling of safety. Take a moment to adjust your window display, install inexpensive light timers to help provide additional lighting along the Mile. Plus, people walking at night will stop and window-shop at your business. Some nice examples of proper lighting along Pacific Avenue include Tap Plastics (1859), Fritz Chin Photography (2014), Empire Theatre (1825), Borelli’s (2051), just to name a few.
Landscaping. Proper landscaping can be used to deter crime and provide a welcoming environment. Consequently, landscaping that is not maintained can offer a hiding place for criminals and a sleeping shelter for transients.’’
Locks. Maintain locks on all back doors, exterior utility room doors and gates. Remove or lock down all areas that may be inviting to transients or those that commit crimes, especially in the rear of the property. Additionally, it would be beneficial to place locks on your trash dumpster(s).
These three things are very simple and easy to do. Relatively speaking, it costs next to nothing and is definitely affordable plus it may prevent a crime and lost revenue. Please take some time to ensure that your place of business is well groomed and maintained.
December is a prime shopping month for all of us, so let’s make an effort to encourage people to come to the Mile. If you have any questions regarding this letter or need assistance with a lighting assessment, please call me at (209) 943-2446 ext.2020.
Merry Christmas,

Arnold J. Chin
